Hellman, who was a prominent figure in left wing Hollywood and New York, was strongly pro-Soviet. Since 1934, she had been under contract to Samuel Goldwyn, for whom she had already co-authored the screenplay of The Dark Angel (1935; filmed earlier as a silent), and converted her drama The Children’s Hour (1934) into These Three (1936), divesting the play of its 28 THE RED SEXTET lesbian overtones, except for those would knew the original and sensed a subtext at work. In the film, two women (Merle Oberon and Miriam Hopkins) are both in love with the same man (Joel McCrea); in the play, one woman harbors a secret desire for the other and resents her engagement to a local doctor.

The revival lasted for only 183 performances, compared to the original, staged by Herman Shumlin, which ran for 691. Another Part of the Forest, the prequel to The Little Foxes, made a star out of Patricia Neal as the young Regina in the THE RED SEXTET 29 process of becoming one of the foxes that spoil the vines.
